This Latin Heritage Month, the sorority is taking time to observe the importance of celebrating one another and those who came before them. “We have truly found people who we trust and love because regardless of our differences we share the same morals and ideals which keep us together.” “We each pull our one weight because not only do we care about our sorority but we truly care about each other and want to be there for one another and become successful as an organization together,” she said. Smaller than most sororities on campus, senior student Zoe Young says they find a way to “make it work.” When they have down time, they enjoy traveling to different campuses to meet their sisters. “I can help make someone’s life a little easier or more enjoyable I feel like I’ve done a good job.”Īside from their contributions to the community, the sorority also hosts cultural, social and academic events on campus. “I enjoy simply knowing that I had the chance to help someone,” Madera said. One of Madera’s favorite parts of the sorority is her ability to give back. “We send them money along with letters for communication to see their progress in life,” Espinal said. SIA also partners with Children’s International to sponsor a child in a Latin country. “We hold fundraisers for this philanthropy and send them money.” “We have two philanthropies, in particular Camp OneHeartland, which is a camp for children affected with HIV/AIDS,” Espinal said. SIA is also big on philanthropy, aiming to give back to their communities and to give back to their native countries. “And to serve as models of excellencies academics and achievement among women.” “We aim to promote sisterhood and leadership amongst ourselves,” the sorority’s president, Amanda Espinal said. The sorority’s mission is to strive towards the expansion of the Latino culture, and to their members and the community at large. Growing up, sophomore student Erika Madera didn’t have any sisters. Cheryl is indeed a valuable financial asset to COE LLC as a whole.Sisterhood comes before anything else in this sorority, which is why they call themselves “hermandad de.” meaning “sisterhood of” in Spanish. She is the Chief Financial Officer of Circle of Excellence, LLC and will assist in every financial aspect of the LLC. During her time as a Senior Settlement Paralegal, she was a member of the pro-bono immigration team who won asylum for a Ugandan man who was persecuted in his home country of Uganda. She is a liaison between the claimants and the Claims Administrator. As a Senior Settlement Litigation Paralegal, she assists in every aspect of a Class Action litigation, including invoicing and analyzing. Cheryl has over 20 years of legal experience as a Senior Litigation Paralegal. After graduating from SUNY New Paltz, Cheryl began her legal career as a legal temporary paralegal and was eventually hired to work full-time as a Paralegal at a well-known Plaintiffs’ law firm in New York City. While at SUNY New Paltz, Cheryl was a part of the Black Student Union, and various student run organizations. Cheryl Boria attended and graduated with a Bachelor of Science from SUNY New Paltz College of Liberal Arts and Science, with a major in Political Science and a minor in African American Studies.
